Alvarez model 5059

by shelly stieh
(virginia)

I would like to know how old this guitar is, where it was built and how much it is worth.
there are other numbers stamped in the wood--310105. what do these numbers mean?

ANSWER

Hi, Shelly--

This model is not listed separately in the Blue Book. The number is the serial number, but Alvarez does not publish their serial number information.

I did, however find a lengthy discussion by other owners of this guitar. Some of them included the prices paid--ranging from $150-200. Here is the link to the discussion:

Alvarez 5059

Hope this is of some help.

Lynne

5059 is the model number
by: George

This is from the Alvares Artist Series pre-1999 (four number model number. After 1999 they have two letters and two numbers. Unfortunately, BlueBook doesn't list it...they have 5002 thru 5237 (5055...5072) is the closest they get. Average for the series i2 95-125 average cond....175-225 for excellent. Hope that helps

I bought mine new for around $300 in 1977. The shape of the neck was considered "experimental" at the time.

a very fine guitar
by: John Hawkwood

I bought my Alverez for $275 at a pawn shop about 4 years ago...I've owned many old Martins including a 68 D-45 and a 39 D-18...This guitar is not as good as the very best Martins or other handmade guitars BUT it is a great guitar....very low and perfect action...very thin neck only a vintage J-200 is thinner, herringbone trim, and rosette and back stripe, diamonds and squares in mother of pearl on the ebonized neck...balanced tone and quite loud.even the neck and side trim looks like old ivorid binding..I believe these guitars are laminated both the very well matched and aged spruce top and the rosewood back and sides...That doesn't seem to matter ..I like this instrument so well I added gold butterbean tuners so it has the look and feel of a late 1940 custom D-28....to me these instruments if in good condition ought to sell for $800 to $1000...but they don't so they are a steal if you can find one... be sure the neck is straight and the action is good cause you don't want to pay more for the repairs than you have for the instrument

We own an original
by: Evelyn

My husband purchased one new for $400 in 1979 and he loves it. It is in prestine condition but I still wouldn't expect to get much out of it since I just bought a nice Gibson for $400 and a cheap one for $80. I know this is not a Gibson but when the prices are in that range most people don't want to pay top dollar for a used guitar. Since my husband loves his and all of the kids like to play his, I would be interested in picking up yours if you have not sold it yet and the price is fair.

Alvarez 5059
by: Darryl

I bought mine new for $240 on sale for 40% off in 1978. These guitars predate the present Alvarez/Yari company: the head of the neck has two opposing capitol A's that are inlaid material.

My 25 year old son plays many instruments and he loves this guitar.

I would not know how to price it, since the link Lynne showed shows 90% of the purchases as second to third... hand buyers from Pawn Shops, and these all had heavy duty wear.

Mine is pristine, and has a very mellow sound.
