Is acoustic drums the best way to go?

There really is no "best" choice. It is purely a matter of what is right for YOU. One advantage of electronic drums is that you can practice in situations where the loudness of acoustic drums is undesirable.

Another is that you can get a lot of different sounds with electronic drums. You can, however, achieve the same variation in sound by triggering and miking acoustic drums.

Acoustic drums have a certain feel that is not quite the same with electronic drums. Also, with acoustic drums, you do not have to invest in an amplifier.

It just depends on which type fits your situation best.
