Epiphone Prophecy SG Custom EX Electric Guitar with EMG Pickups

No longer available at zZounds
Churn out pro riffs in style with this custom SG. It features twin humbucker pickups and comes in a midnight ebony finish.

The new Prophecy Collection features four distinct shapes that all share common features. In addition to the guitar style the model either is an EX (EMG active or the new EpiActive pickups), GX (Gibson USA pickups), or FX (original Floyd Rose Tremolo). Common features include highly figured quilt Maple tops, 24-fret SpeedTaper satin necks, jumbo frets, unique "blade" inlays, Epiphone new pattent-applied-for Straplocks, hand-stained colors and eye-catching Pearl knobs. Because they're all "Customs", they all have bound bodies and necks. The new Prophecy Collection takes advantage of all the design work and testing Epiphone has been doing over the past two to three years.

The Epiphone Prophecy SG Custom EX Electric Guitar isn't for everyone. If you want to blend into the background, you won't like the way its devilish vibe gets you noticed everywhere you go. If you want to churn out amateur riffs, you'll probably hate the sparkling distortion of its twin humbuckers and the glorious sustain of its contoured body. If, on the other hand, you want to walk in the footsteps of legends like Eric Clapton and Angus Young, take your performance to the next level and rock your audience in half, this is your guitar. Go on - be a devil.

The SG has been a legend since it appeared in 1961 as the slimline alternative to the Les Paul. And at the 2008 Winter NAMM show in Anaheim, Epiphone added to that legend with the release of the most exciting SG model to date. Like the other models in the read more ground-breaking new Prophecy Collection, the SG Custom EX is what serious players have been waiting for, combining killer looks with the kind of features you'd normally find on a collector's model. And it's all within reach of the working musician. Epiphone is the only manufacturer licensed to make official copies of the legendary SG, and they've played a blinder with the new Custom EX. Alongside the iconic twin cutaways and mahogany body that you've seen in the rock 'n' roll history books, this latest model also draws the eye with a deep Midnight Ebony finish, pearl control knobs, black Grover machine heads and unique blade fret inlays along the length of a 24-fret ebony fingerboard.

But there's more. The SG has always had a reputation as one of the most playable guitars in rock, and the Custom EX continues that tradition with a lightning-fast SpeedTaper mahogany neck that caters for fat riffs and fruity solos, alongside a LongTone tune-o-matic bridge and stop tailpiece that make drawn-out string changes a thing of the past. The icing on the cake is a pair of rock's baddest 'buckers in the form of the EMG 81 and 85 - giving you the most dynamic and satisfying tone that money can buy.

Overall I am very happy with this guitar. Best bang for the buck I've had in a guitar.
Sound
This guitar has a good mean sound to it that lends itself to punk/metal/heavier music.
Features
One tone knob. One volume knob. Three-way pickup selector switch. I'm quite happy with the simplicity of it.
Ease of Use
As I mentioned before, there's not a lot to configure. I'm not looking to get a bunch of different sounds of this guitar, so easy does it. I'd give it a 9 or 10 if the neck/headstock weren't so heavy. The guitar tends to dip a bit. A good strap with a bit of grip will keep in check though.
Quality
It seems very well made. I expect to keep this guitar in my arsenal for a long time.
Value
This guitar is a great value and easily compares to $1000+ instruments. I picked it up used at a steal of $400. I would consider buying it new again if I had to.
Manufacturer Support
No support needed so far.
The Wow Factor
This guitar looks cool too. The tribal fret markers are nice. The quilted maple is sweet. Even the knobs are kinda cool.
