1978 Ovation Preacher

For those who love vintage, rare, electrics, I have been told how unusually rare it is to even know about this model. Accordingly, most I do actually talk to when in to have the yearly maintenance at my Nashville guitar heaven, I always am also told about electric and "Ovationphiles" who have been looking for this model for up to 30 years. I have yearly maintenance on complete guitar and store it in its beautiful-ghastly orange/taupe protective, original case inside a climate controlled closet space. It's almost like someone found this guitar, in mint condition, but, it's been maintained and cared for, even though not played but about an hour in 30 years. It has a warm, slightly darker than usual, sunburst appearance, and the Gold bridge and tuning keys look great set in this type finish. On the back is a thick plate of silver at the stock that's got an engraved image of the bell-bottomed, high collared "PREACHER" playing his axe. Underneath his boots, is a low # that I'm sure was in the first, and maybe, only Edition Produciton. The fact that it sounds great dry, led to me actually finding out what dry meant, because of the three position tones produced. It's also got a silver strip that houses TWO 1/4 " outs, 1 engraved mono, the other stereo.

ANSWER

The guitar sounds beautiful! Here is what the Blue Book says:

Mint $750
Exc.+ $625
Exc. $525
Avg.+ $450
Avg. $375
General $300

love my Preacher
by: Jimbo

I bought in early 80's and have had many people try to buy from me since then as they are so rare and well regarded. I love the action and clear sound. It's not my only but is my favorite. I used to lend to friends occasionally but haven't for several years as I am becoming a gollum about it! My son has begun playing guitar in the last year and when he's ready he'll be allowed.

Ovation Deluxe Preacher
by: Patrick in St. Paul

I purchased my brand new in 1980 with hard shell case from Schmitt Music in St. Paul. The guitar has 24 karat gold plated hardware. It was the first guitar to have active electronics, two 9 volt powered pickups, extremely quiet with a lot of power. The neck has an ebony fingerboard, pearl inlay, and the head stock has the name and a guitar picture cut from sea shell and carved into the head stock. Switches allow the pick-ups to change from single coil to humbucking. Mine has only been played a few times, no scratches on the pickard. Unfortunately I purchased it with a ding on the neck and a friend added a second. None of the gold plating is worn-off any part and I am reluctance to play. the neck is extremely thin and the action is fast, fast. I am almost tempted to find another one just to play. I paid $550 for guitar and matching case. At the time the most deluxe Les Paul sold for around $1400 but was not anywhere as fancy. Too bad Ovation did not succeed in selling this product, also it is made in the USA
