1976 Les Paul Custom Black/Gold

by Matt
(Michigan)

Seller said it appraised from $2500- $3100 which I thought was a bit high for a 1976. Thanks much.

ANSWER

Hi, Matt--

Here is the Blue Book pricing info:

Mint $1,900
Exc.+ $1,700
Exc. $1,500
Avg.+ $1,200
Avg. $950
General $825

If it were 1975, the pricing is considerably higher--staring at $4000.

My '76 LPC was just appraised by George Gruhn at $2,750. Mine only has small button scratches and the gold is tarnished for a guitar 32 years old. I don't think the sellers estimate is correct. I would make sure it has all original equipment. Any modifications can lower the value of the guitar. So if it has been modified then you should tell him this and ask him to lower the price. This is what George told me when I asked him if I were to do modifications to mine. Bottom line, if it plays well and gives you the sound you are looking for then go for it. I would find other guitars on Ebay to compare with it and see if you can't get him to lower the price. also as some have suggested the Norlin years were crappy. Not so. My '76 plays fantastic and has a great sound. I read many comments on the Norlin years. Some good, some bad. You will find that there will be those who will disagree. My thought is if you own a '76 then you have a right to comment on whether a '76 is a good Norlin guitar or not. Different Norlin guitars that were produced afterwards may have had QC problems. However '76's were a good guitar. Bottom line, is this it all comes down to what you want to get out of guitar. You should shop around more. You may find another LPC that you might like better.
