1969 Gibson Silvertone flat top

by Glenda Merchant "Nena"
(Collins, Mo. USA)

My 1969 Gibson Silvertone flat top guitar is in mint condition. All original NOTHING has ever been changed on it since the day I got it except the strings. It has always been in it's case except the occasional times I have played around on it. It has ladder bracing, and a white pick guard. The wood, I believe is cherry. It is marked with "Made in U.S.A." in blue green ink twice. Once in an oval and that is larger than the smaller stamp that says Made in USA along with the date 6/69 and a number 5. The model number is on the back of the top of the neck between the tuners 319.12009 and it also had made in USA there all in white. The luster and shine is still as beautiful as the day I got it for my 11th birthday. Is it valuable?

ANSWER

Hello, Glenda-

What a good story! What songs did you learn to play when you got your guitar?

I was wondering where the "Gibson" part of your description came from. You see, "Silvertone" guitars were sold by Sears and were made by a few different companies, but Gibson was not one of them.

The Silvertone guitars were mostly entry level guitars and did not sell for a lot of money. The Silvertone acoustics made during the 60's are not listed in the Blue Book, but there are those who collect them. I saw one on EBay for 250.00.

Hope this gives you some idea.

Lynne

silvertone guitar
by: Anonymous

Hi I also have a silvertone in great shape with an amp model 1472. I cannot figure out what to sell it for. My father said it was a Gibson silvertone but I can't find a model number on the guitar. It may have Gibson pickups on the strings is what I guess. Did You find anything else out?

gibson part is wrong
by: Nena

I'm sorry, I made a mistake in the "Gibson" part. I always thought it was a Gibson, but as I was researching it on the internet last night, I found I was wrong. I saw it listed on the page of the Sears catalog with a young girl playing it. It is surely a Silvertone. The rest of the description about it is correct.
My Grandpa bought it for me when I was 11 years old. I started playing by using a teaching record. I don't remember who it was by now, but I learned the basics from it and taught the rest to myself.
I play Christmas songs for my family, and I learned other old country songs like; Paper Roses, by Marie Osmond, Leavin' On a Jet Plane by Susan Raye (I think) Harper Valley PTA Jeannie Sealy, (or C. Riley I can't remember which now)
Some of Loretta Lynn's songs, Ronnie Milsap's. I just play without a pick, just for family.
I probably forgot more songs than I remembered.

I have had a lot of enjoyment from that old guitar. I wrote a few cryin' in you're beer songs, but never published anything.

I mess around and try to teach my grand children every now and then, but I don't think they're really interested like I was.

Thanks for pointing out my mistake Lynne.

Nena

Hi, Nena--

Sounds like the guitar is REALLY worth a lot more than money! If you would like to learn some new things or if your grand children become interested, be sure to take advantage of my Absolutely Free Guitar Lessons
