1966 Martin D-18 and 1973 D-28

by Locke
(North Carolina)

I have some questions that i would love to know. I am about to purchase a 1966 Martin D-18 that just sounds incredible, and getting rid of my 1973 Martin D-28 that doesn't sound that great. Is this smart? Also i looked up on the internet about the value of the 60's D-18 and some say it to be not a collectors piece is that true? And last i'm paying $2850 for the d-18 is this a high price?

Thanks, hope to hear from you soon,
Locke

ANSWER

Hi, Locke--

As far as a "collectors item"--I guess that is a matter of opinion, depending on the collector. The Blue Book values claim to be based on what collectors are paying.

Here are the values for a 1966 D-18:

1966-1967
Excellent $2,900 - 3,500
Average $1,800 - 2,200

So if the guitar that you are buying is of very high excellent quality, then the price you are paying is reasonable.

Just FYI--the prices for the 1973 D-28:

1969-1979 (Indian Rosewood)
Excellent $1,850 - 2,200
Average $1,250 - 1,500

Hope this helps-
Lynne
