1965 Gibson Reverse Body Firebird III in Silver Mist Poly

1965 Gibson Reverse Body Firebird III in Silver Mist Poly

1965 Gibson Reverse Body Firebird III in Silver Mist Poly

I have an appraisal from Gruen that I think is WAY low for this guitar. It is the only Silver one ever seen by Gibson (Walter Carter). It is excellent to near mint, original everything including the case. I have seen other custom color FBs on Gbase that are not as rare going for $55K for a cardinal red or ember red, to $90K for a frost blue.

What is the estimate for THIS guitar in 2010?

Thanks

ANSWER

Hi, Ben--

I can tell you what the Blue Book says:

Mint $14,000
Exc.+ $11,000
Exc. $8,500
Avg.+ $7,000
Avg. $5,750
General $4,750

*Add 25% - 50% for custom colors (depending on rarity of the custom color).

So accordingly, add 50% of 14,000 and you get a price of $21,000.

But then that is just according to the Blue Book.
Bottom line is that any guitar is worth just what someone will pay for it.

Best Wishes,
Lynne

As the voice of Reason...
by: Reason

The fact is, Lynn was dead on, in that any guitar is only worth what someone will pay for it. I promise you that ecen with the internet broadening your market to the entire world, you will never see the kind of money you are speculating your guitar to be worth. I am currently in the market to purchase a vintage Firebird, although I am looking for a players guitar, bot a show piece, I will not be spending more than $6k. The fact is, the collector market is down. Where on earth dis you see these ridiculous prices, averaging to $70k!?!? If you really want to find the true value, and not just inflate your ego, put it up on eBay with a reserve of over $100k and no time limit. I will be shocked if you get a single offer over $20k, and that is the reality of the current market you are facing.

That is what I am talking about
by: Ben

No offense Lynne, but that is kind of what I am trying get around. I was trying to get a real world perspective of value, not the blue book listing (which is never on). NOBODY lists a custom color Firebird for $21K. I have seen standard sunburst firebirds with prices at $25K to $30K. The 3 most recent custom color prices on Gbase were $55K for an Ember Red, $65K for a Cardinal Red, and $90K for a Frost Blue. I am going to make a real time assumption that for insurance purposes, the real value is at least the average of these 3 (approximately $70K), and more realistically, probably over $100K. even Walter Carter cannot remember another silver one ever being made. That being said, I welcome other view points, but I am trying to decide how to proceed with insuring this.

Thanks Lynne, and to all.
