1964 guyatone LG-140T

by barry
(alabama)

I'm looking to buy for cheap, but I want to know if it is even worth buying.

ANSWER

Hi, Barry--

Here is the Blue Book general info:

Instruments previously built in Japan from late 1950s to the mid-1970s.
The original company was founded by Mitsou Matsuki, an apprentice cabinet maker in the early 1930s. Matsuki, who studied electronics in night classes, was influenced by listening to Hawaiian music. A friend and renowned guitar player, Atsuo Kaneko, requested that Matsuki build a Hawaiian electric guitar. The two entered into business as a company called Matsuki Seisakujo, and produced guitars under the Guya trademark.
In 1948, a little after World War II, Matsuki founded his new company, Matsuki Denki Onkyo Kenkyujo. This company produced electric Hawaiian guitars, amplifiers, and record player cartridges. In 1951, this company began using the Guyatone trademark for its guitars. By the next year the corporate name evolved into Tokyo Sound Company. They produced their first solid body electric in the late 1950s. Original designs dominated the early production, albeit entry level quality. Later quality improved, but at the sacrifice of originality as Guyatone began building medium quality designs based on Fender influences.

Here is the pricing info for 1960's models:

Mint $450
Exc.+ $375
Exc. $325
Avg.+ $275
Avg. $225
General $175

I have what I believe to be a 1965 Guyatone Electric Guitar and do not know much about it. We strung in for the first time since I have had it over 28 years now. We were missing a bridge and made a quick substitute out of wood. Blown away by the sound and the quick transisition of sound with the flick of a slide switch it put out trademark sounds of Artist like Stevie Ray, Billy Gibbons, and we could shred Pantara and do our best to follow Buddy Guy. I had goosebumps how magical the music flowed from this instrument. I want to do a short video with it's sound to show how easily this old axe. Rarely have I been impressed until recenly it was played by seasoned guitar players at a Fund raiser. If yours sounds as nice and smooth as mine you have a treasure.
