1956 Guild F20 Acoustic Guitar

by Paul

1956 Guild F20 Acoustic Guitar

1956 Guild F20 Acoustic Guitar

I got this little guitar about a year ago from a gifted guitarist and repair man. The binding on the back had to be replaced, and there are some finish cracks, but overall it's in very good shape. The neck and fretwork feels even more comfortable than that of my 1935 Gibson L00.

I haven't been able to find out much about this guitar, except that the serial number dates it at 1956.

Cool label, as you can see in one of the photos.
The second photo shows the headstock and logo, which appear to be copied after Gibsons of the period.

What was the first year of production for this model? Can you give me an approximate value?

It didn't come with a case, but I store it in a little hard case that once housed a smaller 30s Gibson flat-back archtop.
ANSWER

Hi, Paul--

I substituted the full pic for the neck pic because it is such a nice looking little guitar.

Here is the Blue Book General info:

F-20 TROUBADOR
- small body narrow waist body style, solid spruce top, maple (1956-1958) or mahogany (1959-1987) back and sides, round soundhole, single rosette, body binding, mahogany neck, 14/20-fret rosewood fingerboard with pearl dot inlays, blackface headstock with screened logo, three-per-side chrome tuners, rosewood bridge with white pins, tortoiseshell pickguard, available in Natural or Sunburst top with Mahogany Stain back and sides finish, 13.75 in. body width, 4.125 in. body depth, 24.75 in. scale, mfg. 1956-1987.

So yours was the first year for this model.

Here is the pricing info:

1956-1958
Excellent $1,400 - 1,700
Average $900 - 1,100

Loved This Guitar
by: Steve Chesley

I was able to play this guitar recently and fell in love with it. It has a small body but large sound. This is truly a great find. The fret board action makes it easy to play and because of its size it is very easy to handle. I would love to have this guitar in my collection.

Paul's '56 F20 Guild
by: Lyle

Whoa, I played this guitar recently at a jam. It has incredible projection for its size. The balance between mids, highs, and lows is about as perfect as a guitar can get. One of THE easiest guitars to play up and down the fret board. As a small body guitar it feels so comfortable to play. It's light and sturdy. Unfortunately they don't seem to make guitars like this any longer. (keep your eye on this ax when other guitarists are around)
